Dennis Wayne Free, 71, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on August 29,
2024, at Hospice of Southern Kentucky. Born on September 2, 1952, in Ft. Bragg, NC, Wayne
was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose kindness and humor touched all
who knew him.
Wayne obtained degrees from Lewisburg High School, David Lipscomb College, and Western
Kentucky University and went on to become a well-respected classroom teacher, administrator,
and public education advocate. He was known for his dedication, kindness, and integrity,
qualities that earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and community. Wayne
loved his family deeply and enjoyed supporting his grandchildren in all of their endeavors.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Peggy; his children, Derrick Free (Wendy) and Kristie
Johnson (Andy); his grandchildren, Anne Wesley Free, Brooklyn Johnson, Gracie Free, and
Marshall Johnson; and his siblings, Johnnie Free, Bryan Free (Debbie), and Faye Musselman.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dennie Free and Murriel Free and his siblings, Gayle
Free (Mary) and Lisa Farley (Joe). His family and friends will remember him for his boundless
spirit and his selfless nature.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Cone Funeral Home at 1510
Campbell Lane, Bowling Green, KY 42104. Visitation will begin at noon and with a memorial
service starting at 3:00 pm. The family invites all who knew Wayne to join them in celebrating
and honoring his life.
His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all
those who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Kentucky or the American
Cancer Society in Wayne’s honor.
