Earl Cogan

Earl T. Cogan Age 92 of Bowling Green. KY died Sunday August 28, 2016 at the Medical Center in Scottsville, KY. Earl was born January 12, 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio, a son of Thomas John Cogan and Annabelle Lapthorn. Earl proudly served his country as a Medic during World War II. He was injured his first day in battle as a German sniper shot him in his left arm. As a result, Earl was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1948. He then attended the Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois where he met Carmen Purcell and they were married on June 12, 1949 at the Methodist Temple in Terre Haute, IN. Earl was ordained as a Methodist Minister and served churches in Indiana, Lexington, KY, Maryland and Delaware before retiring after 66 years. He was preceded in death by his parents: Thomas John and Annabelle Cogan, and two brothers: Jack and Joe Cogan. His younger brother, Richard, died the day after Earl. Earl is survived by his loving wife: Carmen Cogan of Bowling Green, KY, two sons: Leland (Joella) Cogan of Lansing MI, and Richard (Audrey) Cogan of Tulsa OK, a daughter: Carol (Jack) Scharlow of Bowling Green, KY; 12 grandchildren: Scott (Kelly) Cogan of Lansing, MI; Rebekah Zorgdrager (Kamren) of Erie, CO; Emily Kinser of Bowling Green, KY; Ruth Cogan of Astoria, NY; Katie (Garrett) Trabue of Bowling Green, KY; Chip (Megan) Cogan of East Lansing, MI; Kyle (Lauren) Scharlow of Bowling Green, KY; Evan (Cameron) Scharlow of Bowling Green, KY; Charissa (Joshua) North of Shasta Lake, CA; Josiah Cogan of Edmond, OK; Nathaniel Cogan and Benjamin Cogan of Tulsa, OK. Earl is also survived by 14 Great-Grandchildren. Earl also is survived by a sister-in-law Pat Cogan of Cincinnati, OH along with other relatives and friends. The funeral service that will be celebrating Earl's life will be held on Friday September 2, 2016 at 2:00 pm at the Christ United Methodist Church (716 Cave Mill Road Bowling Green, KY) with the Rev. Rebekah Zorgdrager officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery and Dr. David Grout will be the officiant. Visitation for Earl will be held at Christ United Methodist Church on Friday September 2, from 1:00 pm until the time of service at 2:00 PM.
