Mr. James Wilson Scott, age 86 of Bowling Green, KY, passed away Sunday, October 3, 2021 at Tristar Greenview Regional Hospital in Bowling Green, KY. James was born January 8, 1935 in St. Louis, MO to the late Melvin Scott and the late Lillian Pickle Scott. James is also preceded in death by his brother, Melvin Scott Jr. James is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Rose Marie Kattar Scott. Together they had 6 children, Debbie Williams (Jim) of St. Louis, MO, Anna Michalak “Cookie” of Austin, TX, Toni Korte (Bill) of Austin, TX, Steve Scott (Patty) of Bowling Green, KY, James Scott (Nikki) of Bowling Green, KY, Jef Scott (Michelle) of Bowling Green, KY. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Lisa Williams, Jennifer Korte, Jessica Korte, Paul Scott, Ciara Scott, Patrick Scott, Cameron Scott, J Michael Scott, Zach Scott, and great grandchild Taylor Korte. James Wilson Scott was raised on a family farm in Belle Rive village in Jefferson County Illinois. During his school years he was a Boy Scout, he ran track and pole vaulted. He enjoyed designing model airplanes and flying them in competitions. He had numerous talents such as painting, woodworking, welding sculptures and playing musical instruments. He was crafty with puns and the use of spoonerisms. He was mathematically and mechanically gifted and would read anything he could get his hands on. James was a man of faith and had extensive knowledge of the Bible. As a young man he worked as a welder and a builder before joining the military where he served his country honorably for 39 years. He was a highly decorated Chief Warrant Officer 4 and served as a member of the 160th Night Stalker elite aviation group. He served three terms in the Vietnam War and served in Operation Desert Storm as well as many other conflicts throughout the Middle East and worldwide. James has received numerous Commendation medals, recipient of a Purple Heart, received The Bronze Star for heroic achievement during combat and was awarded other Meritorious service medals. He saved fellow soldiers from a burning aircraft, pulled a family from an inflamed car and never stood by when someone was in need regardless of the risk. He was highly skilled, an expert marksman and a man of true Grit, but he also had compassion and the will to serve others. In the mid 70’s he opened and operated Side Real Ceramics store while stationed at Ft Rucker, Alabama. In 1997 James was recognized as The Soldier of the Year by Boeing Helicopter. He has certifications from Boeing in technical engineering regarding the Chinook CH-47 helicopters in which he was considered an expert. He helped design the in-flight fueling system on the CH-47. He also helped design a “folding blade” system for helicopters, drastically improving downtime after transporting them by aircraft to get them unloaded and in flight. With all his military accomplishments his greatest achievements came from his commitment and dedication to his family. He loved his children and spent more time with them than he did pursuing his own interests or friends. Through his own words and actions, he taught his children how to be kind, respectful, responsible and to never quit. He was a devoted husband and always cited his wife in all his accolades. He fought till his last breath to be with his wife Rose, he loved her with all his heart. The family has entrusted Cone Funeral Home (1510 Campbell Lane) with arrangements. The family will receive visitors and friends Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM following the visitation. Mr. Scott will be laid to rest on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West located at 5817 Ft. Campbell Blvd. Hopkinsville, KY 42240.
