John Edward Downing and his beloved wife, Sheryl Magee Downing, both passed away on June 27, 2026. John passed away following an accident, and Sheryl, after a lengthy illness, passed away shortly thereafter. While their nearly simultaneous passing was not what the family would have wished, we take comfort in believing that God, in His wisdom, knew best. Their love for one another created a bond so deep that they now continue their journey together in eternity.

John and Sheryl met later in life and lovingly blended two families into one. Together, they shared 48 years of marriage and seven children.

John was born in Flippin, Kentucky, to J. M. and Isabel Downing. He graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. John was proud to serve his country as a Captain and Flight Surgeon in the United States Navy. He established his Ophthalmology practice in Bowling Green, Kentucky, initially partnering with Dr. Robert Crosby on Nellums Avenue. Throughout his distinguished career, he mentored and worked alongside numerous Ophthalmologists and Optometrists, helping shape the future of eye care in Kentucky and beyond. John was instrumental in helping found the Unitarian Universalist Church in Bowling Green, where he faithfully served as church secretary for many years. He was also an active member of the Caveman Chorus, the Bowling Green Noon Lions Club, the Rotary Club, and the well-known local “Liars Club”. One of his greatest passions was serving others. He taught at both the University of Louisville and Vanderbilt University, helping launch the careers of many Ophthalmologists. He also served two terms as President of the Kentucky Medical Association. John also dedicated time to numerous international medical mission trips, serving patients in communities around the world.

Sheryl was born in Tylertown, Mississippi, to Fred M. and Eddie (Dillon) Magee. One of twelve children, her family remained at the center of her life. She was a fierce defender and devoted protector of those she loved. Sheryl embraced many roles throughout her life. She was a homemaker before becoming a licensed optician and serving as Optical Manager for C & D Optical for many years. She also attended Western Kentucky University, earned her pilot’s license, and enjoyed studying martial arts.

John and Sheryl shared a deep commitment to philanthropy and humanitarian outreach. Through their charitable foundation, they supported numerous projects throughout the community and the world, including the establishment and support of an eye clinic in Huamachuco, Peru. Their generosity, compassion, and dedication to helping others left a lasting impact on countless lives.

John and Sheryl were married on February 14, 1978, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, with their children in attendance. Their marriage was a testament to love, family, and partnership.

They are survived by their children: David (Kristie) Downing, Neal (Susan Joy) Downing, Michelle Mills-Downing, Linda (Rick) Downing Whittington, Kim (Allen) Mills-Downing Papp, Mark (Cathy) Downing, and Eric (Karlie) Downing.

Their legacy continues through their 14 beloved grandchildren: Ashley, Bryan (Amanda), Tate (Mandie), Colby (Matthew), Cassi, Johnna, Brandi (Rob), Spencer, Trisha (Eric), Alex (Shelby), Alizabeth, Jackson (Payton), Jacob, and Kaden. 16 cherished great-grandchildren: Charleigh, Avery, Zippy, Drew, Scout, Everett, Arlo, Luke, Kayla, Neal, Baylee, Brennan, Morgan, Madison, Gavin, and Riley. 4 precious great-great-grandchildren: Addison, Abell, Archer, and Rowan, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

John is survived by his sister Jane Cranfill (Lexington, KY), and Sheryl by her brother Johnny Magee (West Palm Beach, Fl). They were both preceded in death by their parents, grandson Michael Whittington, and Sheryl was preceded in death by ten of her siblings.

A celebration of life honoring John and Sheryl Downing will be held on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Knicely Conference Center, Room 208, in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Orbis International or United Cajun Navy, organizations whose missions of service and outreach reflect John and Sheryl’s lifelong commitment to helping others.

A private graveside service for John and Sheryl was held on July 5, 2026, attended by family in a time of remembrance and reflection.

Though they have departed this earthly life, John and Sheryl leave behind a legacy of love, service, generosity, faith, and devotion to family that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved them.
