Marie Matcovich

July 27, 1932 — June 15, 2021

Marie Matcovich (age 88), native Astorian, peacefully passed from this earth in the early morning of June 15, 2021, the 36th anniversary of the passing of her beloved husband Liberty Ray Matcovich. Marie was attended by her son, Steven with his fiancé, Diane as well as her daughter, Elaine Childs with her husband, Tony. In addition to being predeceased by her beloved husband Ray, Marie was predeceased by her parents, Gaetano and Caterina Salmeri (born Bonomo); brother, Domenico Salmeri; sister, Domenica Golino, and nephew Nicholas Buccellato. Marie is survived by her sister, Vincenza Buccellato; niece Susan Kostbar and her husband, Fred; nephews, Anthony Golino and his wife Gail, and Thomas Buccellato and his wife Vasiliki. Marie is also survived by several grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews, as well as her daughter Phyllis, son-in-law Nick, and grandson Nicholas. Marie truly personified her self-given moniker of “Astoria Girl” in that she was born in Astoria in 1932, graduated from Long Island City High School in 1950, married at The Church of the Most Precious Blood in 1959, and lived on 28th Road for over two decades raising her family. Most of Marie’s work life took place in Astoria and included office work for Consolidated Edison at the Astoria facility and administrative duties at various local businesses culminating with the Mackool Eye Institute. Marie spent the last few years in Bowling Green, Kentucky primarily at Arcadia Senior Living where she made friends and received assistance from the caring staff. Visitation: Farenga & Sons Funeral Home, Astoria, NY Tuesday, June 22, 2021 from 3 p. m. – 5 p. m. and 7 p. m. – 9 p. m. Burial: Wednesday, June 23rd at 10:30 a. m. at Calvary Cemetery, Astoria, NY Local arrangements were entrusted to Cone Funeral Home (1510 Campbell Lane, Bowling Green, Ky)
