It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William “Irvin” Abney, 74, of Bowling Green, KY, who passed away on May 30, 2024. Born on November 27, 1949, to William Simon Abney and Evadine White Abney of Tompkinsville, KY. Irvin led a life filled with service, love, and dedication to his family and community.
Growing up in Tompkinsville, Irvin shared his childhood with his two sisters, Penny Bryant and Sandy Conkin, and his brother, David Abney. As a boy, he was actively involved in the Boy Scouts, where he developed a love for the outdoors that he carried throughout his life. An avid outdoorsman, Irvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and all activities that connected him with nature. His passion for the outdoors was a defining characteristic, reflecting his adventurous spirit and appreciation for the beauty of the natural world.
Irvin dedicated his professional life to public service. He worked as a federal probation officer, a role in which he displayed unwavering commitment to justice and rehabilitation. After retiring from his federal position, he continued his service on the Kentucky State Parole Board, contributing his expertise and compassion to the state's justice system.
Irvin's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Jenny Jacobs, her husband Andy, and their three children, Grace, Anne Greer, and Murray. Irvin is also remembered by his former wife, Gail Abney Thompson, with whom he remained close while they continued watching their grandchildren grow and cheering for them during sporting events. In his later years, he found companionship and joy with his “best friend” Nancy Thacker (Fancy Nancy). Their special friendship was based on faith and love for the Lord and each other. Irvin was a member at Lehman Avenue Church of Christ as well as Greenwood Park Church of Christ throughout his adult life.
Irvin was a devoted father and grandfather, who took immense pride in coaching Jenny's softball and basketball teams during her childhood. His love for his family extended to joyful gatherings at the lake, where he cherished moments spent with family and friends.
Irvin will be remembered for his dedication and love to his family , and his love for the great outdoors. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
